Clean Up Mold Naturally with Essential Oils

Toxic mold has become a serious problem and is estimated to be in about 50 percent of the homes in the USA and Canada. If you suspect or know that your home has mold it is wise to tend to the problem as soon as possible as to avoid negative health affects to you and your family. If you do not have mold it is recommended to 'prevent' it from occurring.

High quality essential oils, such as Young Living's, can play an important role in helping to prevent toxic black mold from occurring. It is so easy to prevent mold by using Young Living oils and to prevent mold from coming back.

10 Steps to Prevent and Eliminate Toxic Mold

If you do not have mold - in a Nebulizer Diffuser, diffuse the Thieves or Purification blend of essential oils for 15 minutes every 3 hours, or you may instead diffuse for 8 hours, non-stop, once a week. Tip: you can buy a light timer to plug your differ into and set the timer.

If you have mold -- Eliminate it and keep it from coming back

1. Sampling – you may want to contact a professional to have sampling done to determine the type of mold, and whether it is toxic or not. Toxic mold must be dealt with differently than non-toxic mold. If you cannot afford to have professional sampling done you can still try the 10 steps. Tip: the DIY mold sampling test kits are not accurate, so it is best to avoid them. Tip: it is best to discard any items that you do not need or want any longer - and if you do have mold do not sell or donate any items that may be contaminated with mold spores as this will give someone else the problem.
2. Diffuse - after your samples have been collected, diffuse the Thieves essential oil blend for 24-72 hours, nonstop, in the space. One Cold-air Nebulizer diffuser works well in spaces up to 1000 sq. ft. in size. If possible, and for best results, leave the room closed and sealed during this intensive diffusing. This will allow maximum penetration and absorption of the essential oil. It is best to 'not' be living in the space(s) that are being diffused as the essential oils, though they are nontoxic, will be too intense to stay around for longer than a few minutes after the essential oil mist is in the air. Do not leave children, pets, or fish in the space(s) while the 24 hour non-stop diffusing is taking place.
3. Repair all leaks - repair all leaks and eliminate all sources of moisture. This is a must!
4. Clean thoroughly - if sampling identifies NO toxic mold, then after diffusing has been completed, clean visible mold and stains with the Thieves Household Cleaner, undiluted. Use protective equipment and take precautions to avoid contact with and breathing mold spores while cleaning.
5. If sampling identifies Toxic Mold - contact a professional mold remediation service to have infested materials removed and properly disposed. Do not sell or donate any items that may be contaminated with mold spores, as this will give someone else the problem.
6. Resample - have your professional resample to be sure all sources of mold have been identified and remediated.
7. Repeat - if necessary, repeat steps 1 through 6, above.
8. Remove - mold infested materials, seal in plastic and properly dispose. If you do NOT have toxic mold, you may dispose sealed materials in your garbage.
9. Repair, Replace, Refinish all affected areas.
10. Diffuse Regularly for prevention and protection. See above, for details.

FAQ's

Q: How many bottles of the essential oil blend are required in order to be able to diffuse continuously for 24 hours or longer?

A: Generally, when using the recommended diffuser with a 6 watt air pump, one 15 ml bottle of the essential oil will last between 2 and 3 days if you are diffusing continuously. The rate of diffusion depends on many things, including the size of the diffuser’s pump (6 watts is recommended), as well as atmospheric conditions.

NOTE: you will have to make an additional purchase of a 6 watt air pump, generally these cost about $30 and can be easily found at your local pet store. The air pump used to disperse the essential oil is the same kind of air pump used for fish tanks. Young Living does not sell, nor does the diffuser come with a 6 watt pump, the diffuser comes with a 3.5 watt pump which is fine for normal aromatic conditions but not for treating mold conditions.

Q: How large a space does one of the recommended diffusers and one 15 ml bottle of the essential oil blend cover?

A: One 15 ml bottle of the Thieves essential oil blend and one diffuser, using the oil blend and diffuser we recommend (6 watts), is sufficient for a room that is up to 1,000 sq ft. in size. If you have several rooms that you wish to address, you may either acquire additional diffusers and bottles of essential oil, or you may simply diffuse in one room and then move the diffuser to another room. Moving the diffuser from room to room will save you money, however, it may
increase the amount of time that mold persists in your space.

Q: How do we prevent mold from developing if we do not currently have a mold problem?

A: To prevent mold from developing in a space, diffuse the Thieves essential oil blend (using the recommended cold-air diffuser) for 15 minutes every 3 hours on a daily basis, or you may instead diffuse the Thieves essential oil blend once a week, continuously for 8 hours (non-stop).

Q: If we have successfully remediated mold, how do we prevent the mold from returning?

A: After mold remediation efforts are complete, we recommend diffusing the oil blend for 15 minutes every 3 hours, or you may instead diffuse the oil blend for 8 hours, non-stop, once a week as a preventative measure.

Q: Can people be present in a room the entire time you are diffusing or should they stay in another room?

A: Yes, the blend of oils is non-toxic. However, due to the presence of Cinnamon and Clove in the essential oil blend, it is recommended that you limit each exposure to between 10 and 30 minutes and no more than 3 times daily. Individuals and pets have different body types, different blood types, different blood chemistry and different sensitivities. Therefore, it is better to err on the side of caution.

In most circumstances, when diffusing for prevention (i.e. when diffusing for no more than 15 to 30 minutes at a time) people, children and pets may be present.

However, when diffusing continuously for 24+ hours, it is strongly recommend that the room or rooms where you are diffusing be closed and sealed and that people, children and pets not be present in the room. This will facilitate maximum penetration and absorption of the Thieves essential oil blend into the mold and the porous materials in the room, recommended that you limit each exposure to between 10 and 30 minutes and no more than 3 times daily. Q: Do you suggest wiping down the area where mold is found with the Household Cleaner? And do you dilute the Thieves Household Cleaner or use it straight?

A: After diffusing is completed, clean visible mold and stains with the recommended Household Cleaner, undiluted. Use protective equipment and take precautions to avoid contact with and breathing mold spores while cleaning. Even dead mold spores can cause allergic reactions, so protective equipment is highly recommended.

Q: When using the Household Cleaner for mold on the exterior of a house or structure, can it be diluted?

A: Yes, when spraying on the outside of a house, the Thieves Household Cleaner can be diluted 1:1, i.e. 1 part Cleaner to 1 part water, and still be effective. Another way to think of this would be to use half Cleaner and half water in a sprayer. In some geographic areas where there is low humidity, you may dilute the Thieves Household Cleaner 1:4, 1 part Cleaner to 4 parts water.

Q: How long does 1 bottle of the Thieves essential oil blend last?

A: When diffusing continuously using the recommended diffuser with a 6 watt air pump (recommended), the 15 ml bottle of the essential oil will last about 24 hours.

For general maintenance afterwards diffuse 15 minutes every 3-5 hours – or - diffuse continuously for about 8 hours once a week. At this rate, one 15 ml bottle of the essential oil will last about 1 month. The rate of diffusion depends on many things, including the size of the diffuser’s pump (6 watts is recommended), and atmospheric conditions. Changes in air pressure and humidity do have minor affects on diffusion rates.

Q: Do you have suggestions as far as square feet (area) in the room, and how many bottles of the essential oil blend to diffuse?

A: Using the recommended cold-air nebulizer essential oil diffuser (6 watt air pump recommended) one 15ml bottle of essential oil is sufficient for about 1,000 square feet of space when diffusing continuously for up to about 24 hours.

Q: What about my car, can I diffuse my car if it has mold also?

A: Yes. Because the area inside a car is much smaller, you can run an extension cord out to your car and carefully set up the diffuser in a location where it will not spill over. Fill the diffuser well with essential oil and turn on the diffuser, leaving car windows and doors closed – running the diffuser overnight. You will want to make sure the diffused essential oil gets into the heating/air conditioning vents. To do this, in the morning start your car and turn on the blower (it is not necessary to have hot or cooled air blowing) and let the car run for about 30 minutes.

Caution: do not sit inside your car during diffusing but also do not leave your car unattended during this final diffusing process.

Q: Does the Thieves essential oil kill the mold called Aspergillus penicillium?

A: No. You will also need to purchase a 15 ml bottle of Lemongrass essential oil to specifically treat Aspergillus penicillium.
