Using Essential Oils Safely

Before You Start

Young Living essential oils are a terrific option for those seeking to enhance the quality of life in a more natural way. But if you have been using chemical laden products there are some cautions you will want to take so that the chemicals can begin leaving your body. Each body is different and no one rule or set of guidelines applies to everybody, please use common sense.

  • Always skin test an essential oil before using it. Each person’s body is different, so apply oils to a small area first. Apply one oil or blend at a time. When layering oils that are new to you, allow enough time (3 to 5 minutes) for the body to respond before applying a second oil.
  • Exercise caution when applying essential oils to skin that has been exposed to cosmetics, personal care products, soaps, and cleansers containing synthetic chemicals. Some of them—especially petroleum-based chemicals—can penetrate and remain in the skin and fatty tissues for days or even weeks after use. Essential oils may react with such chemicals and cause skin irritation, nausea, headaches or other uncomfortable effects.
  • Essential oils can also react with toxins built up in the body from chemicals in food, water and work environment. If you experience a reaction to essential oils, it may be wise to temporarily discontinue their use and start an internal cleansing program before resuming regular use of essential oils. In addition, double your water intake while using essential oils.
  • If skin irritation or other uncomfortable side effects persist, discontinue using the oil(s).
  • If your body pH is low (4.0 to 5.0), you also could have a negative reaction to the oils.

Those who use commercial products which contain chemicals could have skin sensitivities when using essential oils. This is usually because essential oils try to break-down chemicals. Thus, you may want to avoid using commercial products that contain chemicals to eliminate potential problems:

  • Cosmetics, deodorants, and skin care products containing aluminum, petrochemicals, or other synthetic ingredients.
  • Perms, hair colors or dyes, hair sprays or gels containing synthetic chemicals.
  • Avoid shampoos, toothpastes, mouthwash, and soaps containing synthetic chemicals such as sodium laurel sulfate, propylene glycol, or lead acetate.
  • Chemical garden sprays, paints, detergents, and cleansers containing toxic chemicals and solvents.

Caution:

Essential oils may sting if applied in or around the eyes. Some oils may be painful on mucous membranes unless diluted properly. Immediate dilution is strongly recommended if skin becomes painfully irritated or if oil accidentally gets into eyes.

Flushing the area with a vegetable oil should minimize discomfort almost immediately.

DO NOT flush with water! Essential oils are oil soluble, not water-soluble.

Water will only spread the oils over a larger surface, possibly exacerbating the problem.

Keep all essential oils out of reach of children and only apply to children under skilled supervision.

If a child or infant swallows an essential oil - administer a quality vegetable oil, such as: V-6, olive oil, or a mixture of milk, cream, yogurt, or another safe, oil-soluble liquid. Call a Poison Control Center or seek emergency medical attention if necessary.

Guidelines for Safe Use

  1. Always keep a bottle of Young Living's V-6 Massage Oil (or a pure vegetable oil) handy as a carrier oil whenever using essential oils. Vegetable oils dilute essential oils if they cause discomfort or skin irritation.
  2.  Keep bottles of essential oils tightly closed and store them in a cool location away from light. If stored properly, Young Living essential oils will maintain their potency for many years.
  3.  Keep essential oils out of reach of children. Treat them as you would any product for therapeutic use.
  4.  Essential oils rich in menthol (such as peppermint) should not be used on the throat or neck area of children under 30 months of age.
  5. Angelica, bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, orange, tangerine, and other citrus oils are photosensitive and may cause a rash or dark pigmentation on skin exposed to direct sunlight or UV rays within 3 to 4 days after application. Note; ingesting citrus oils does NOT cause photosensitivity.
  6. Keep essential oils away from the eye area and never put them directly into ears or directly into the nasal cavity. Do not handle contact lenses or rub eyes with essential oils on your fingers. Oils with high phenol content—oregano, cinnamon, thyme, clove, lemongrass, and bergamot—may damage contacts and will irritate eyes.
  7. Pregnant women should consult a health care professional when starting any type of health program.
  8. Epileptics and those with high blood pressure should consult their health care professional before using essential oils. Use caution with hyssop, fennel, basil, wintergreen, nutmeg, rosemary, peppermint, sage, tarragon, and Idaho tansy oils.
  9. People with high blood pressure should avoid using sage and rosemary.
  10. People with allergies should test a small amount of oil on an area of sensitive skin, such as the inside of the upper arm, before applying the oil on other areas. The bottom of the feet is one of the safest, most effective places to use essential oils.
  11. Before taking GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) essential oils internally, dilute one drop of essential oil in one teaspoon of an oil-soluble liquid like Blue Agave nectar, honey, olive oil, V-6, or milk. Never consume more than a few drops of diluted essential oil per day without the advice of a physician.
  12. Do not add undiluted essential oils directly to bath water. Using Young Living's Bath Gel Base or a Sea Salt for all oils applied to your bath is an excellent way to disperse the oils into the bath water.  When essential oils are put directly into bath water without a dispersing agent, they can cause serious discomfort on sensitive skin because the essential oils float, undiluted, on top of the water.
  13. Keep essential oils away from open flames, sparks, or electricity. Some essential oils, including orange, fir, pine, and peppermint are potentially flammable.
  14. Do not use peppermint essential on open wounds.
  15. No list of do’s and don’ts can ever replace common sense.
  16. Start gradually, and find what works best for you and your family. It is foolish to dive headlong into a pond when you don’t know the depth of the water. The same is true when using essential oils.

My Household Tip

Thieves Household Cleaner as a Laundry Detergent

I have not bought any type of laundry detergent or laundry products for 6 or 7 years now. I use Thieves Household Cleaner in place of laundry detergent. I love it so much that I haven't used anything else since.

Here's how I use it:

In my front loading washer, I put into the detergent dispensor one capful (Tablespoon) of Thieves Household Cleaner - and that's it!

I never use bleach or fabric softener - I don't have to! Beacuse Thieves cleaner is not a soap it doesn't make clothes feel stiff or scratchy. My clothes smell really good too.

I save a lot of money on laundry products by only needing this one product.

Thieves cleaner is an excellent option for those whowant to minimize their exposure to cancer-causing household products and want to have a Green lifestyle.

Thieves Household Cleaner is all-purpose - I even wash my car with it! ~ Evelyn Vincent

My Pet Tip

Deep Relief Essential Oil RollOn for Dog Back Pain

A few years ago Bandit injured his back and sometimes he gets stiff from it and you can see he feels quite uncomfortable. Bandit loves the Young Living essential oils and often we let him choose which oil he wants applied.

Last summer his back was bothering him pretty badly and I asked him if he wanted Palo Santo, he didn't give his usual positive response. So I went to my essential oil case and held various bottles of essential oils about 12 inches from his nose and asked him if he wanted this oil. He still didn't give me his usual 'yes' sign and I was running out of options.

Instead, he walked over to the coffee table and pushed a new essential oil that we had just gotten in, Deep Relief RollOn. I picked up th Deep Relief and said, "do you want oils?" and there was his yes response. It took some effort to apply the deep Relief as I have to move his long hair out of way so the ball of the rollon applicator could make contact with his skin, but we did it. About 10-15 minutes later he was feeling much better. So now he has two favorite essential oils, Palo Santo and Deep Relief!

My First Aid Tip

Nail Fungus

Using Young Living's Melrose essential oil blend, apply a couple drops to the location of the nail fungus. Re-apply two to three times a day until fungus is gone.

My Home Spa Tip

Lavender-Peppermint Foot Soak

2 drops Lavender

2 drops Peppermint

2 drops Chamomile

1/4 cup Epsom Salts

Cool, soothe and relieve your painful and swollen feet after a long day. Add essential oil and epsom salt mixture to a large bowl of warm water. Soak your feet for at least 10 minutes.

My Skin Care Tip

Frankincense and Boswellia Cream for Wrinkles

This is my most favorite way to prevent wrinkles...

Put 2 drops of Young Living Frankincense essential oil in the palm of your hand, then dip your finger into the essential oil and gently dab onto face (avoiding contact with eyes). After a minute, apply the Young Living Boswellia Wrinkle Cream onto face and neck area.

Note: the Boswellia Wrinkle Cream is very concentrated, you will only need a tiny amount.

My Immune System Tip

High Potency Probiotic: Life 5

Over the past 30 or more years I've tried many different brands of probiotics, some of which didn't have any effect whatsoever. I was very excited when Young Living created "Life 5" and couldn't wait to give it a try. I really like it's effectiveness.

I especially like the ingredients in Life 5, it contains five clinically proven probiotic strains including three advanced super strains to enhance intestinal health, sustain energy and improve immunity. Life 5 contains 8 billion active cultures and improves colonization up to 10 times.

A few weeks ago I ate some food that didn't agree with me and my stomach began hurting and rumbling. I took 2 Life 5 capsules and within 5-10 minutes I was feeling back to normal. I'm empressed with Young Living's Life 5.

Ingredients: HOWARU™ Rhamnosus (Ld. rhamnosus), Lactobacillus acidophilus (LA-14), HOWARU™ Bifido (Bifidobacterium lactis), Lactoferrin Streptococcus thermophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, magnesium stearate, and silica.

My Kid Tip

Monsters Be-Gone Spray

We all know that monsters under the bed at night can be detremental to parents and kids getting a restful nights sleep. Here is a super easy "Monster" spray that you and your kids can make to keep those scary creatures far away!

You will need:

• 1 - 6 oz. spray bottle (choose a shape, size, and color that best represents your army against monsters)

• 8-12 drops Young Livig Essential Oil (see good choices below)

• Water

Fill your spray bottle 7/8 of the way full with water, add essential oil, shake. To use, lightly spray under bed, in closets, or anyplace else monsters hide.

Additional Tip: Decorate your spray bottle with pictures or small items that can be tied on to the bottle.
